MUSICARES
MusiCares Focuses on the Health and Welfare of Musicians
MusiCares has, at its heart, a simple yet difficult objective:
to focus the attention and resources of the recording
industry on issues of human service and welfare involving
professionals within our own industry. "The music industry
is at the forefront of environmental, political and social
issues, and our artists and executives have lent
considerable support to many of these movements and
concerns," says Recording Academy President Michael
Greene. "Now it's time to help ourselves, to extend this
energy to our own industry.
"The independent nature of this profession promises very
little in the way of financial security," continues Greene. "It
offers even less if a person runs into a health crisis. Music
people have no available national insurance program, for
example. No referral or recovery program for substance-
abuse treatment. No pension plans or retirement facilities.
And, until now, no organization to address these matters."
