  3. MusiCares Focuses on the Health and Welfare of Musicians
  4.  
  5. MusiCares has, at its heart, a simple yet difficult objective: 
  6. to focus the attention and resources of the recording 
  7. industry on issues of human service and welfare involving 
  8. professionals within our own industry. "The music industry 
  9. is at the forefront of environmental, political and social 
  10. issues, and our artists and executives have lent 
  11. considerable support to many of these movements and 
  12. concerns," says Recording Academy President Michael 
  13. Greene. "Now it's time to help ourselves, to extend this 
  14. energy to our own industry.

  16. "The independent nature of this profession promises very 
  17. little in the way of financial security," continues Greene. "It 
  18. offers even less if a person runs into a health crisis. Music 
  19. people have no available national insurance program, for 
  20. example. No referral or recovery program for substance-
  21. abuse treatment. No pension plans or retirement facilities. 
  22. And, until now, no organization to address these matters."
